KA MA MI

 KA MA MI PROGRAM

·        KA MA MI program was established in the year 2020 by BEST NACEM FOUNDATION. BEST NACEM FOUNDATION facilitators for this initiative visit the prisons or the police stations with questionnaire forms to interview the inmates.

After the interview, BEST NACEM foundation makes a follow up to the investigators handling the cases of the inmates that have been interviewed or to the courts that their cases are pending for their criminal proceedings and charge sheets. “A charge sheet is a document that details a brief fact of the offences allegedly committed by the accused persons in prisons or police cells.

The charge sheet is then presented by a representative from BEST NACEM FOUNDATION to the lawyers at the LEGAL AID COMMISSION or private practitioners for motions to be drafted and filed at either the Circuit, District or the High court for the interviewed inmates to either reappear in court to be Granted bail, speed their trials, Convicted, or to be discharged. These cases are done at a lower charged fee rate by private practitioners or for free(pro-bono) by lawyers at the Legal Aid Commission.

Finally, a hearing notice is served on either the investigator or the prison service to ensure that inmates appear before the assigned court for proceedings.

The initiative enjoys the collective efforts of the Judicial Service of Ghana, the office of the Attorney General, the Ghana Prison Service and Ghana Police Service as well as BEST NACEM foundation (Civil society body that serves as facilitators).

KA MA MI project since its inception has helped reduced prison population (remand inmates) in the Eastern Region.
